
While both products have a great temperature range of operation, PE is a preferable choice for applications in colder climates. Comparing PE wire to PVC wire, the former is about 28% lighter. This lowers the possibility of harm and makes handling easier.
Even at soldering iron temperatures, the XLPE insulation will not melt or drip, and it has better ageing properties and higher flow resistance. An additional advantage of XLPE insulation over PE insulation for LV and MV cables is improved resistance to water.
Resilience. While HDPE is a petroleum-based polyethylene thermoplastic, PVC is a sturdy vinyl polymer. Both pipes withstand high temperatures with strength. When evaluating failure ratings under conditions such as wind, rain, stress, heat, or cold, HDPE has been shown to be more resilient.
The low melting point is one of its drawbacks, though. By "cross-linking" the polymer chains, this drawback is removed. The melting point is raised by the cross-linking. Because of its many benefits, XLPE is a very valuable material for cable insulation.
